The survey is one of the key metrics underlying the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), in which the University of Birmingham was awarded Gold in June 2017.

The NSS asks 27 questions, relating to eight aspects of the learning experience. Students are also given the opportunity to make positive and negative comments in an open answer question. For more information about what is asked in the NSS, please see The National Student Survey Questionnaire (pdf).

The NSS is run by Ipsos MORI and commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) on behalf of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), the Department for Economy Northern Ireland (DfENI), Health Education England (HEE), National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and participating private/alternative Higher Education providers and Scottish Higher Education Institutions.
