Following a very generous donation in 2007 from Nancy Blachman to promote mathematics within schools, the School of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham organize and contribute to an annual Mathematics Festival aimed at Year 10 school pupils. The festival takes place in September each year and is aimed at pupils with an expressed interest in mathematics. The objective of the festival is to develop further the pupils budding interest in mathematics by revealing its use in every day life, its application to modern society and perhaps most of all its beauty.
The Festival normally involves both maths workshops and maths relays where group learning skills and an understanding of the value of collaboration in mathematics are developed.
There is also a speaker who discusses and presents the aspects of more advanced mathematics that are either used in his or her career or are interesting for their own sake. For example in 2009, Dr Acheson (Oxford) talked about the role of dynamics in music and fluid flow illustrating this with various eye-catching experiments.
