Scholarships and finance 

All Scholarships offered by the Graduate School in Mathematics are very competitive and open only to students who have accepted an offer of a place on our PhD programme. When applying for entry to the programme, if a candidate requires a scholarship they should state explicitly which ones they are applying for.

School Scholarships

These scholarships cover all tuition fees and a maintenance allowance of approximately £13,600.

  • EPSRC Scholarships – home and EU students only.
  • Birmingham International Scholarships.

If applicants wish to be considered for the award of a scholarship, please indicate this when asked "How do you intend to fund your studies?" on the application form. 

BBSRC-funded Industrial CASE Scholarship


A BBSRC-funded Industrial CASE PhD studentship is available for a project on modelling the dynamics of microfibre-laden flow, jointly with the company Linear Diagnostics Ltd. The studentship provides 4 years of funding, covering tuition fees (UK/EU) and stipend at the standard rate of £13,726 tax exempt (UK only), commencing September 2014. The position will be highly suitable for a graduate from a mathematics background who wishes to develop their mathematical abilities further whilst simultaneously training in multidisciplinary science, including learning to conduct wet laboratory work and helping to commercialise research findings. 

Mathematical aspects of the project will include numerical and asymptotic modelling of complex fluids. A principal focus of the commercial collaboration will be improving portable devices to detect pathogens in drinking water, a potentially life-saving development. 

Applications are encouraged from candidates holding or expecting a first class mathematics degree and who are enthusiastic about the real world applications of science. University Scholarships

These scholarships are very competitive and only the most qualified students will be entered by the Graduate School of \mathematics.  We emphasise that the Graduate School and not the student applies for these scholarships.  Students accepted to the Graduate School after 31st May of the year of entry cannot be considered for these scholarships.

  • Alumni Scholarship – open to all full-time postgraduate students (including international students) who are an alumnus or the child of an alumnus of The University of Birmingham, preference given to students reading a research degree.  Renewable for up to 3 years. Value of award: Home rate tuition fees only.
  • Dudley Docker Research Scholarship – open only to existing students at The University of Birmingham who have graduated in a Pure or Applied Science and continuing to undertake research at the University in a Science or Engineering field. 
  • Richard Fenwick Scholarship – open to any full-time postgraduate student. Value of Award: Home tuition and a maintenance allowance.
  • AE Hills Scholarship – open to any full-time postgraduate student. Value of Award: Home tuition and a maintenance allowance.
  • Santander and University of Birmingham Scholarship
    In partnership with Banco Santander, the University of Birmingham is delighted to offer postgraduate scholarships to outstanding candidates from Latin America and USA.

In addition PhD students can supplement their grants and awards by participating in the teaching of our undergraduate students.
