Racing Team

UBRacing is the University of Birmingham’s Formula Student team. Supported by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, this hugely successful project enables students to gain hands on experience of a real life engineering task. Unlike many other university Formula Student teams, Birmingham encourages students from all years to take part. This progression through the team is vital to becoming a well-rounded engineer.

UB Racing teamThe aim of the project is to design and build a single-seat race car prototype which is then put through its paces at various competitions around the world. The team competes each year at Silverstone against teams from around the world. In previous years the team has visited the USA, UK, Australia and Germany.

This project is entirely student run. This includes managing the project, creating a business presentation, gaining sponsorship, advertising through media channels and designing, manufacturing and testing the car.

UBRacing is one of the UK’s oldest Formula Student teams. In 2017, the team will be in its 20th year, making its 20th car.

The project provides a superb opportunity to apply knowledge from your degree, and allows you to improve upon many skills including practical workshop skills, communication and team working.

There is an active social aspect to the project and activities include go-karting and curry nights. The project is hard work and requires a lot of commitment, but it is also one of the most rewarding projects that you could take part in here at the University of Birmingham.

The team is always looking for new members; first year students are more than welcome to join in. Visit the UBRacing website www.ubracing.co.uk for more information.
