An Introduction to Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for Recurrent Depression

Category

Date(s)
Tuesday 18th June 2013 (09:00-17:00)
Description

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) combines meditation practice with techniques from cognitive therapy in an effective relapse prevention programme for recurrent depression, now recommended in NICE Guidelines. MBCT helps participants learn to recognise and ‘step out’ of distressing mental habits and behaviours (self-criticism, rumination, worry and avoidance) that could lead to a depressive relapse. Evidence from randomised controlled trials indicates that MBCT is most effective in reducing risk of relapse in patients with three or more previous episodes of major depression. This one-day workshop provides a theoretical introduction to MBCT and includes experiential exercises taken from the MBCT programme, so that participants can experience a first hand ‘taste’ of mindfulness practice.
