Lisa Bortolotti's research focuses on the philosophy of psychology and psychiatry; she sees the role of a philosopher as that of a rigorous thinker who plays a part in society's progress and as such wants her research outcomes to actively contribute to making other people's lives better.

The European Research Council are funding her current research project, PERFECT (Pragmatic and Epistemic Role of Factually Erroneous cognitions and Thoughts), which will consider the possibility that irrational cognitions such as delusions, can have a positive function to play. Although a conterintuitive thesis, it could have important implications on existing theories and symptoms management in clinical settings, and be instrumental in challenging the stigma associated with mental illness.
