Vetus Latina Iohannes

An edition of the Old Latin versions of the Gospel according to John

The Old Latin translations of the New Testament constitute an important early witness to the text of the New Testament.

Dr Philip Burton and Professor David Parker are leading a team to produce a new critical edition of the Old Latin evidence for St John's Gospel. This will be published under the imprint of the Vetus Latina- Institut in Beuron.

The first stage, the Verbum Project, was to make new electronic transcriptions of all surviving manuscripts. This was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board of Great Britain from September 2002 until September 2005. An electronic edition of these manuscripts is now available on the polyglot website www.iohannes.com/vetuslatina.

The second stage, running from September 2005 until September 2010, is the collection and incorporation of patristic data. This is also funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

As part of this project on the Old Latin Bible, a dedicated website has been developed, at www.vetuslatina.org.
