Research skills training

Students studying in library cafeDoctoral researchers usually begin their doctorates having completed a postgraduate taught course in Social Research, and all applicants are assessed to identify their training needs before and during their registration.

Many doctoral researchers undertake core doctoral training modules in their first year of registration, which cover Research Design (1 module), and Social Research Methods (2 modules). Additional advanced research training modules are available.

Throughout their programme, students are also encouraged to attend regular research student seminars and events, other Institute or University seminars and appropriate external events including academic conferences.
