Leading Learning for Effective Safeguarding

The aim of this award is to offer candidates (and Safeguarding Boards) a tailored input which supports leaders in the education process in the coordination, delivery and evaluation of training programmes that will promote positive practice in safeguarding.

Who is it for?

This module is offered on a 'stand alone' basis and is designed to meet the needs of leaders in the education process underpinning effective safeguarding.  This programme has been delivered to staff working under the auspices of Local Children's Safeguarding Boards, but could be tailored to the needs of persons working in the adult protection field.

The Module

Aston webb buildingThis module is credited at Postgraduate (M) level and offers 20 academic credits.  Teaching is delivered face-to-face on the University of Birmingham campus in the form of a 5 day module (2 plus 3 day blocks).  Within the programme there is an emphasis on critical reflection and analysis in relation to the establishing and maintenance of a learning process that will promote positive safeguarding practice.

Currently this module is offered on a commissioning only basis. Organisations, either alone or in partnership, are invited to commission delivery of the module and should contact the module tutors.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the Module, candidates will be able to:

  • Critically identify and explore the impact of legislative and policy drivers for the provision of training that promotes positive safeguarding practice.
  • Critically analyse both the tensions and opportunities arising from values for accountable safeguarding in partnership settings.
  • Critically reflect on, and act upon, positive values for effective adult learning.
  • Critically reflect on, and demonstrate the usage of theories of learning and training in their work.
  • Support, interpret and critically evaluate the delivery of effective learning programmes to promote effective safeguarding.
  • Critically reflect on and demonstrate the capacity to motivate learners for continuing professional development.

Assessment

Assessment takes place through individual presentations and a 2,500 work-based assignment.  The presentation involves attendance during a sixth day after the module teaching has finished.

Possible progression

This module is accredited within the Leadership and Management for Social Work MA/Postgraduate Diploma/Post-qualifying (Higher Specialist) Award. The module can be carried forward to form part of that award enabling candidates to complete other leadership modules in order to achieve a 120 credit M level Diploma.  This in turn, can lead to a research focused dissertation of workplace based project and lead to a University of Birmingham MA degree.
