This conference is jointly organised by the Institute for Research into Superdiversity at the University of Birmingham, the West Midlands Strategic Migration Partnership, Migrants Right Network and the Migrants in Rural Areas (MIRA) project. It aims to analyse the impacts of post-2004 EU migration on the economy, public sector and community cohesion in the West Midlands.

Speakers already confirmed include:

  • Professor Anne Green (University of Warwick)
  • Dr. Carlos Vargas-Silva (Migration Observatory/University of Oxford)
  • Dr. Jenny Phillimore (University of Birmingham)
  • Dr Michal Garapich (University of Roehampton).

A series of evidence-based workshops and discussions that will focus on both the challenges and opportunities linked with the recent economic migration will enable participants to put forward their experiences, all of which will be captured for a post-conference report. The conference will also consider the likely changes and impacts emerging from the opening of the UK labour market to Bulgarians and Romanians in 2014.

Who should attend?

  • Researchers and academics interested in intra-EU migration
  • Leaders and chief execs of local authorities from across the region, and officers whose service is affected by EU migrants
  • Representatives of other public sector agencies (e.g. NHS, education, community safety)
  • NGOs working with Accession country migrants
  • Diplomatic representations of relevant member states
  • Trade unions

Delegates from the public sector might be particularly interested to join discussions concentrating on anticipated effects of Romania and Bulgaria gaining full access to UK’s labour market in January 2014. The conference in general hopes to contribute in a significant way to a wider- regional and national- debate on economic migration and UK’s relationships with Europe.

How to register

A registration fee of £15 applies to all delegates except those in the voluntary and community sector who are exempt from this.
