Following the news that Tommy Robinson had quit as leader of the English Defence League, IASS’s Chris Allen was invited by a number of media outlets to comment on the matter. Drawing on research undertaken into the EDL and its street-level campaigns, these included interviews for BBC Radio WM and with Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis for the BBC News Channel.
Talking about his surprise at the move by Robinson, Chris stressed that whilst he had rejected the violence that accompanied many of the movement’s protests and marches he had still not rejected the ideology that underpinned the movement, one that had promoted anti-Muslim and anti-Islam expression.
If interested, you can watch Chris’s interview on the BBC News Channel here.
Alternatively, you can listen to his interview on Radio WM here.
You can also view some of Chris’s writing on the EDL including a journal article published in Patterns of Prejudice entitled “Opposing Islamification or promoting Islamophobia? Understanding the English Defence League”.
