Kathryn Farrow is a qualified social worker.

Qualifications

  • MSc in Criminal Justice Management 2003
  • Certification of Qualification for Social Work; Diploma in Social Administration and Social Work (University of Manchester) 1980
  • BSc (Hons) in Manaagement Sciences, (UMIST) 1977

Biography

Kathryn worked for the Probation Service for 24 years as a practitioner and a manager and has extensive knowledge and experience of criminal justice management and practice. She joined the University in September 2001 contributing to a wide range of Professional and undergraduate programmes within IASS.

In the role of Director of Education Kathryn works to ensure the School develops and delivers high quality teaching and learning programmes relevant to qualifying and post qualifying social work, social policy and health service management settings.

Teaching

Kathryn contributes to a number of modules on the PQ in Leadership and Management (higher specialist) for Social Work.

She is the module coordinator for the Creating and Maintaining Partnerships in Social Care and Health’ as part of the programme above.

Postgraduate supervision

  • Practice tutoring for MA/BA Social Work practice placements
  • Masters dissertations on Social Work management, Community Safety and Anti Social Behaviour and Youth Justice.

Research

Kathryn has worked jointly with David Prior and Nathan Hughes on a number of research projects into anti-social behaviour and civil renewal recently completing a literature review on ‘Maturity, Young Adults and Criminal Justice’ for the Barrow Cadbury Trust for the Transition to Adulthood Alliance.

Kathryn is also undertaking a small piece of research into the ‘involvement of service users and carers in post qualifying social work management education’.

Other activities

Kathryn is Chair of the Steering group of the ‘Thinking in Practice’ seminar series. This is a collaboration between the University of Birmingham, DMU, Midlands Probation Training Consortium and KWP to provide an occasional seminar series aimed at promoting a dialogue between academics, practitioners and managers about recent research and practice in offender management.
