I was seconded to HSMC as a Visiting Fellow in 1977-1978, funded by the Department of Health and arranged by Don White.
I helped with courses and studied for a Masters Degree in Public Policymaking. This was probably the first time the Department of Health acknowledged the value of postgraduate courses for managers. I went on to be District General Manager of South Shropshire Health Authority from 1990 to 2001 and then Strategy Director and later Chief Executive of Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals, an acute Trust in Berkshire, that became an NHS Foundation Trust in 2007.
I retired in 2009 and I'm now busy competing as a Masters oarsman and Chair of a charity renovating a ship on Lake Malawi as a mobile primary care centre. I have fond memories of Derek Williams and the team and the opportunity to put some academic rigour alongside practical management experience.
