Stuart Haywood (1979-1992)

Stuart Haywood, HSMC (1979-1992)I was at HSMC from 1979-1982 as King's Fund Fellow seconded to HSMC and then from 1982-1992 as a member of academic staff.

Since leaving HSMC I was a self-employed trainer and consultant from 1992-1996 and from 1992-2000 I undertook a number of voluntary assignments, mainly for British Executive Services Overseas in Lithuania, Armenia, Ukraine, Czech Republic and also for Nazareth Hospital (Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society).

Other activities included: Chair, Committee of Management, Retreat Hospital, York (1990-1996); Mentor, Prince's Trust (1995-2002) and Chair, Droitwich Spa Civic Society; (briefly) Chair, Patients' Panel for Local GP Practices; Trustee/Director, Droitwich Spa Age UK (2002 to date).

When I was at HSMC my main responsibilities/interests were:

  • Training and support for health authority chairs and members (one of whom was an ex-famous England footballer, Sir Tom Finney!).
  • Support and development of chief executives new to the NHS
  • Developing the link with a Management Centre based in Mexico City and participating in training programmes for hospital managers in South America.
  • Workshops: Directors of Medical/Professional Services.

My memory of working at HSMC was of an environment that was often stimulating, offering opportunities to innovate (programme for the then new responsibilities for registration and monitoring private nursing homes); personal challenges for growth (when funding base changed and became less secure); congenial and housed in very nice premises (Quaker history particularly resonant, as were frequent observations of a green woodpecker drinking from the pond!).
