Professor Jon Glasby spoke recently on the role of councils in leading the public health agenda at a national Local Government Association event. Speaking alongside Una O'Brien, the new Department of Health Permanent Secretary, Jon talked about the potential to develop a more joined-up response to public health from within local authorities, building on their existing well-being agenda and their role as a strategic 'place-shaper'.
'To help make the new structures work, there will have to be a focus on outcomes rather than process and structure, and an emphasis on culture, values and organisational development,' notes Jon. 'All of this will be difficult yet fundamental in a rapidly evolving policy context and in challenging financial circumstances'.
