The team behind a research project aimed at understanding clinical/managerial relationships has just published its final report. The research, funded by the NIHR Service Delivery and Organisation programme has involved HSMC Professors Martin Powell and Russell Mannion as co-investigators. Led by Durham University’s Dr Ian Greener, the two year project involved a review of existing literature, followed by a workshop at the Wolfson Institute, Durham during which managers and clinicians explored the findings in greater depth.
‘What we know about how managers and clinicians interact in the NHS was in need of urgent synthesis,’ says Martin. ‘Meanwhile recent thinking also suggested that such work should aim to produce knowledge that is contextually-sensitive and takes account of different types of organisation and patterns of relationships.’
The review has led to a series of propositions that the team hope can be used to inform the development and improvement of management development programmes.
