On 1 January HSMC welcomed Mark Exworthy who has joined HSMC as Professor of Health Policy and Management from Royal Holloway, University of London where he was Course Director of the MSc `Leadership and Management in Health'.

He has previously held posts at Southampton University, London School of Economics (LSE), University College London (UCL) and Oxford Brookes University. He was a Harkness Fellow in health care policy, based at University of California-San Francisco (UCSF) (funded by the Commonwealth Fund of New York) and is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of California - San Francisco.

Professor Exworthy’s research interests fall into 3 themes:

  • Governance and implementation relating to policies to tackle health inequalities and other social `problems'.
  • Professionals and managerialism in health care organisations (especially relating to management of clinical performance).
  • Decentralisation in health care organisations including a focus on organisational autonomy and localism.

His research has been funded by the ESRC, NHS (Dept of Health and NIHR), Joseph Rowntree Foundation, NHS Confederation and the Commonwealth Fund of New York and he has been involved as PI or co-PI on research grants totalling £2.5m.

He has written 3 books and has authored 50 articles and advised NHS organisations, the Department of Health, NICE and the World Health Organisation among others.
