Placement Checklist

  • You can find out which students will be coming onto placement and when by accessing the database.
  • The student should contact you up to 2 weeks before the placement to introduce themselves and to double check administrative details.
  • You may wish to use this form for the students’ induction
  • On the 1st day of the placement the student will present you with their assessment, marking guide and PPAF in the relevant colour. See Assessment page for examples of these.
  • You will need to sit down with the student in the 1st week to complete the learning contract, the student should bring a copy with them but you can also download one here:

    Learning Contract Version 1

    Learning Contract Version 2

    Learning Contract Version 3
  • It's a good idea to book some time for a 1/2 way appraisal (generally around week 3) near the beginning of the placement as it is easy to forget this otherwise.
  • A member of the clinical team will contact you within the 1st week to arrange a visit (if you would prefer to have this arranged before the start of the placement please feel free to contact the relevant clinical tutor via phone or e-mail).
  • BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy - Placement Overview
During the three years of their undergraduate degree our BSc students complete over 1000 hours of clinical practice. Practice Placement 1 is undertaken in the 1st year; placements 2-4 are undertaken in the 2nd year and placements 5 & 6 take place in the final year.
  • MSc (pre-reg) Physiotherapy - Placement Overview
MSc students also complete 6 placements however this time they are distributed over 2 years as opposed to 3. MSc placement marks do not count towards final degree classification however all placements must be passed to allow graduation.
NB - All stated hours do NOT include lunch

BSc Practice Placement 1...

  • BSc Practice Placement 1
  • Practice Placement 1 (PP1) takes place in Jan/Feb and lasts for 4 weeks. The students complete 32 hours per week and usually work 4 x 7 hour days and 1 x 4 hour day. This leaves the equivalent of one 1/2-day of study time.
  • The location of the 1/2 day is flexible and should fit in with the needs of your service. It is best to negotiate the timing of the 1/2 day when the student first contacts you up to 2 weeks before the placement is due to start. This includes any discussion/negotiation of 7-day working and extended hours.
  • Start and finish times are also flexible and should be negotiated with the student and prior to the start of placement.
  • PP1 is NOT an observational placement (see our FAQ page).
  • The marks for this placement do not contribute to the final degree classification but students must pass this placement before they are allowed to progress to the second year.
