Professor Janice L Thompson, Head of the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, states: "This outcome is incredibly exciting for the University and School, and reflects the high quality research and teaching we deliver, our world class environment at the University of Birmingham, and how these interact to optimise employment opportunities for our students. We are honoured to be globally recognised for our hard work and dedication to excellence in sport, exercise and rehabilitation sciences."

This year’s rankings cover 46 subject areas, in each of which over 500 universities are assessed. If the institution both offers the subject and produces a sufficient number of research papers it will be given a score.
