We are ranked first in the UK among the Sport and Exercise Sciences Institutes in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008.
Our long history of research excellence enables staff to build challenging teaching programmes covering sports excellence and global health problems, such as those associated with ageing and obesity
The School’s Research Mission is a scientifically rigorous approach to the study of sport, physical activity, exercise, and health. Studies involve an interdisciplinary research approach integrating the expertise and analytical skills of the School’s five overlapping research groups:
100% of our staff were entered into 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). 60% of our research activity performed at a world-leading and/or an internationally excellent level.
You can find more information on the RAE process and detailed results of the UOA 46 Sports-Related Studies results.
The new building, equipment, and expertise are also key to collaborative translational medicine programmes with the School of Medicine and local NHS Research Trusts exploring the role and implementation of life-style interventions involving physical activity and diet in disease prevention and health promotion.
The School has maintained a vibrant postgraduate community with over 50 full-time PhD students registered. However, it is not just the size of our postgraduate community that is important, but its quality. This is achieved through careful targeted recruitment, supportive supervision arrangements (all students have two supervisors plus a mentor), and providing formal training, both within and outside the School, in both generic (e.g., quantitative research methods, statistics, and scientific writing) and discipline specific (e.g., phlebotomy, measuring and handling physiological signals, assay techniques, questionnaire construction) skills.
The School has strong collaborative links with other schools in the University. Most noticeably, we have strategic alliances with the following:
