About

Kyriaki Makopoulou joined the University of Birmingham in September 2008. She is currently seeking to develop robust, practical and cost-effective tools to measure the iimpact of school-based, collaborative forms of learning on physical education teachers and pupils (2013-present). She has previously investigated Physical Education teachers' health pedagogies and professional development needs (2010-2011).Her PhD focused on the nature of PE teachers’ engagement in career-long professional learning and its impact upon practice (awarded in 2009). Before joining University of Birmingham, Kyriaki was a research associate at Loughborough University involved in the independent evaluation of the National Continuing Professional Development Programme for PE teachers in England since 2005. Kyriaki was an undergraduate student in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences in Athens, Greece (1996-2000) and completed an MSc in Physical Education (awarded with distinction) at Loughborough University in 2003.

Teaching

Her teaching is currently focused around the SPECS (Sport, Physical Education and Coaching Science) undergraduate programme in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences. In particular, she is involved in the following modules that have both a strong theoretical and practical orientation:

Teaching and Coaching: games and athletics (Year 1) Developing Teaching and Coaching: gymnastics and dance (Year 2) Volunteering in Sport Contexts (Year 2)

Kyriaki supervises third year dissertation students. Aligned with the School’s aims, her aim is to build students’ teaching and learning capacities in order to be successful professionals in their field.

Postgraduate supervision

Kyriaki supervises a number of MPhil and PhD students

Kyriaki is interested in supervising doctoral research students in the following areas: 

  • Continuing Professional Development (both formal and informal learning) for Physical Education (PE) teachers
  • Learning in early years: physical development 
  • Cognive, creative and social development of students / participants

Research

Kyriaki is currently a member of the Effective Learning research group within the school. Her main area of research is Physical Education teachers’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and pedagogy. She is currently seeking to measure the impact of CPD interventions on both teacher and pupil learning.
