We believe that Sport and Exercise Sciences goes way beyond the study of performance and athletes.

2011 National Student Survey "91% of students said that, overall, they were satisfied with the quality of the course"
We apply sport science to a wide variety of different populations, so that what we learn can benefit physical and psychological health in a far broader context. For part of our research we study older adults: how can we encourage them to exercise, what happens to their immune system as they age and how exercise can help that.
We study obese populations, in terms of what makes them obese, what are the health consequences and how this can be reduced at an individual and population level.
Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education "High-quality teaching by committed and well-qualified staff, supported by comprehensive teaching materials"
Our research influences how we teach you. You are taught by academics who are experts in their fields, investigating the frontiers of their subjects. Our teaching was also rated excellent by the Higher Education Funding Council for England in their assessment of teaching quality in UK universities.
All our staff are at the cutting edge in their field, contributing to a international research community. This means that we can teach you brand new research from across the research, often many years before it gets into textbooks.
How will I be taught?
The degree programmes involve traditional teaching methods – such as formal lectures – as well as small group seminars, computer based learning, and practical laboratory classes. There are plenty of opportunities to get to know the lecturers and postgraduates. Particular attention is paid to developing learning skills as well as knowledge. These skills include computing and statistical competence, report writing, oral presentations and participating in group work. We believe that attention to these skills is one reason why our graduates are so attractive to potential employers.
Sporting Champions working with our degree students
In all three years there are laboratory practicals in physiology and psychology that involve students acting as both subjects and investigators. In the third year students also undertake an extended research project in an area of interest relating to exercise, sport or health.
Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education "…strong influence of staff research on the curriculum which is apparent at all levels and through projects, allowing students to develop and demonstrate research skills"
