Dr Annette Wood is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in the Institute of Applied Health Research. Her substantive employer is Public Health England where she is a Consultant in Public Health. She works with NHS England/Improvement both locally in the Midlands and nationally where she provides public health advice for Specialised Services Commissioning. She has an interest in training in public health, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Biography

Annette Wood qualified in medicine from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1986. She completed General Practice training in Cardiff and briefly worked as a GP.  In 1991, she moved to the West Midlands to undertake Public Health specialty training, based mainly in Birmingham and Worcestershire.

She specialised in Communicable Disease Control and was appointed as an NHS Consultant to Birmingham Health Authority in 1996. She moved to the Health Protection Agency (now Public Health England - PHE) at its inception in 2003 and was a Unit Director for four years.  Throughout this time, she was an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Infection and Immunity at Birmingham University.

In 2011, she moved substantively to the University of Birmingham as Senior Clinical Lecturer and MPH Programme Director. In 2014 she moved within the University to the NIHR Horizon Scanning Centre where she worked as a part-time Medical Advisor until 2016.  She returned to PHE in 2014 initially as a part-time Consultant Screening and Immunisation Lead then as fulltime in her current post in 2016.

Other activities

Annette has been extensively involved in teaching and training throughout her career at local, regional and national level. She was a regional Training Programme Director for Health Education England from 2015 to 2019. She was also a training coordinator, regional Public Health training Board member and regional Less than Fulltime training advisor.  She is an Educational Supervisor. She is a trained assessor for the national Public Health recruitment programme.  She is an Examiner at the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) and deputy Chair for the Final Membership Examination.  She was also the Director of Training (Registration and Certification) for three years at the FPH until 2014.

Annette is an appraisal and revalidation assessor for PHE. She also represents the FPH on consultant appointment committees.
