Richard Barrett studies at Cape Town and Oxford Universities before joining the staff of the Economics Department, The University of Birmingham, UK.
Richard Barrett was was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in1991, and is currently an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in theDepartment. His lecturing has been chiefly in advanced micro areas,and he has supervised several PhD students, and examined PhD theses inboth English and French. For many years, he ran the Department'spostgraduate school.
Main research interests are in an area of social choice,and has undertaken research on the gravity trade model, and in healtheconomics on QALYs, and refereed extensively for academic journals.
A recent publication is "A new approach to rights in socialchoice theory which incorporates utilitarianism" (with AnnePetron-Brunel and Maurice Salles), Social Choice and Welfare 22 (1),February 2004.
