Jason Yap is currently a Cancer Research UK Clinical Research Fellow to Prof Ciaran Woodman and Prof David Luesley in the School of Cancer Sciences. He is also an Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist Trainee (ST) with the West Midlands Workforce Deanery.
Jason graduated with an MBBS from University College London in 2005 and became a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2010. Prior to becoming a Clinical Research Fellow Jason was a Clinical Research Fellow in Gynaecological Oncology at the Pan-Birmingham Gynaecological Cancer Centre.

After completing his undergraduate training in the Royal Free and University College Medical School and meeting the requirements of Foundation Doctor Training Programme, Jason joined the West Midlands Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist Registrar Training Programme in 2007. He has completed his basic and intermediate training in this specialty and successfully become a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist in 2010.
It has always been Jason’s intention to train as a Gynaecological Oncologist and he successfully applied for the post of Cancer Research UK Clinical Research Fellow with the CRUK centre at the University of Birmingham in 2012. This post provides him with the means and opportunity to pursue a programme of research which will hopefully contribute not only to his own personal development but also to the development of Gynaecological Oncology as an academic discipline.
Towards this end Jason hopes to develop a stream of research relating to the pathogenesis and treatment of vulval neoplasia. Many studies designed to identify novel biological markers and new therapeutic targets in women with vulval cancer have been limited both by the relatively small number of cancers investigated, and by the failure to control for the impact of other prognostic variables. Therefore, he has collated baseline clinical pathological characteristic and outcome data on a substantial cohort of patients who were treated in the Pan Birmingham Gynaecological Cancer Centre and who have already accrued substantial follow-up. This work has now been published (Yap et al. 2011).
To exploit this clinical material Jason has joined an Epigenetics Group within the School of Cancer Sciences in the University of Birmingham. This group is studying the epigenetic changes caused by oncogenic viruses including human papillomavirus, and the epigenetic reprogramming which follows the use of epigenetic therapy. He has helped secure for his epigenetic studies, ethical and R&D approval for the use of material from his vulval cancer cohort; from archival samples taken from women with vulval intraepithelial neoplasia and lichen sclerosus; and for the prospective collection of vulval samples from diseased and disease-free women.
As part of His PhD study, Jason is currently investigating the use of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in the treatment and prevention of vulval neoplasia. On completion of his PhD, he will apply for a clinical lectureship in Gynaecological Oncology which will allow him to train as a subspecialist whilst maintaining his research momentum.

Evaluation of the use of sentinel node biopsy in the management of squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva (manuscript submitted for publication).
On-going evaluation of risks factors for endometrial cancers with a view to triaging those patients with post-menopausal bleeding (PMB) who are at risk of developing endometrial cancer. Jason has written a computer programme for this purpose which has been extended and modified for use as a standard clerking and treatment pro-forma in PMB clinics at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust.
During his BSc degree in Pharmacology, under the supervision of Professor Anthony Dickenson, Jason investigated the inhibitory effect of extracellular magnesium ion on NMDA receptors in relation to pain control.
In the final year of his medical degree, Jason reviewed the outcome of fertility preservation in female cancer survivor; this won the medical school best essay prize in obstetrics and gynaecology and has since been published (Yap and Davies 2007).
