About

Carmen Rosa Caldas-Coulthard has an MA in English Language and Literature from The Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil; a Diploma in the Teaching of English Overseas (Dip.TEO) from the University of Manchester, and a Ph.D. in English from The University of Birmingham.

She was formerly Professor of English Language and Applied Linguistics at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, where she started her academic career and taught for many years. She was a founding member of the Brazilian Applied Linguistics Association and was responsible for introducing Systemic Linguistics into Brazil in the 80’s.

In the 90’s she was one of the first academics to teach courses in the areas of Critical Discourse Analysis and Gender Studies. Since 1996, she has worked continuously at the University of Birmingham in the Centre for English Language Studies. She has taught courses and given more than 90 conference papers and seminars in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Britain, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, Portugal, The Netherlands and USA.

Teaching

Carmen Rosa is the convenor of the MA course in Critical Discourse, Culture and Communication. She also teaches on the full-time campus-based MA courses offered here at CELS. 

Postgraduate supervision

Carmen Rosa is interested in supervising MA, MPhil and PhD research in the following areas:

  • Multimodality and social semiotics Multimodality
  • Media Discourse
  • Visual Communication
  • Narratology and Stylistics
  • Anything that combines the above

Research

Her research is located principally in the paradigm of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), examining the ways in which language constructs and is constructed by social practices, participants and ideologies. Her edited collection Texts and Practices: Readings in Critical Discourse Analysis, (Routledge, 1996), was a landmark publication, significant in establishing the field of Critical Discourse Analysis. She is currently investigating how identities are construed semiotically in discourse and how multi-modes of communication contribute to the overall meanings of texts. A particular interest is the question of how gender and cultural representations are realised in the discourse of the media and in new technologies.
