Anthony Barnett is Professor of Medicine, University of Birmingham and Honorary Consultant Physician and Clinical Director of Diabetes/Endocrinology/Weight Management at the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, Birmingham.
He has published over 550 peer reviewed papers in scientific journals including Nature, Nature Genetics, Human Molecular Genetics, Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, British Medical Journal, Diabetes, Diabetologia and Diabetes Care. He has written over 80 books and book chapters in diabetes related areas. He has received major grants from the MRC, Wellcome Trust, Diabetes UK, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International and Industry. He has been listed as number 11 in the world of most highly cited authors in the diabetes literature over a 10 year period.
He was awarded the 2011 Banting Memorial Lecture by Diabetes UK-their highest award to a person of International standing in Diabetes research. He is acknowledged as a first rate communicator and lectures extensively locally, nationally and internationally. He has also in the past been editor of 5 different quarterly educational journals aimed at the primary care multi-professional team and is/has been on the editorial board for the Postgraduate Medical Journal and Current Medical Research and Opinion.
He also has acted as adviser on health related matters to The EU and UK Health select Committees. He is a regular advisor to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence(NICE) in diabetes related areas as well as to the National Prescribing Centre, Horizon Scanning for new drugs and Committee on Safety of Medicines. He presently represents the European Association for the Study of Diabetes at the European Medicines Agency.
