Ahmad El-kharouf is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Research in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham. He is also managing the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Fuel Cells and their Fuels; a collaborative consortium between five leading UK universities (University of Birmingham, UCL, Imperial College London, University of Nottingham and Loughborough University) to train doctoral students for the growing fuel cell and hydrogen market.

Ahmad’s primary research focus is on the development of the next generation of automotive Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) through the optimisation of components and materials. The aim is to enable the operation of PEFCs at temperatures up to 120˚C and increase the stack volumetric and gravimetric power density. The work on this topic is conducted in close collaboration with leading industrial partners in the field. Moreover, Ahmad’s activity includes research on the development and testing of materials for PEM Electrolysers.

Furthermore, Ahmad is involved in projects on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) development and the integration of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies in transport and stationary applications.
