Exploring solutions to reduce emissions from motorcycle taxis in Kenya (NERC Disciple Hopping for Environmental Solutions – Principal Investigator)
The project investigates the environmental and health implications associated with motorcycle taxis usage in Nairobi (Kenya). It aims at identifying solutions to reduce air and noise pollution impacts, with a particular focus on exploring the benefits and barriers of the transition to e-mobility for the motorcycle taxis sector.
The study explores
1) the role of the motorcycle taxis within the transport system in Nairobi and understand what type of mobility they enable;
2) the environmental implications of the increase in the number of motorcycle taxis within Nairobi, including associated health implications for the people working in the sector
3) the implications for policy engagement and transport policy recommendations that could make the motorcycle taxis sector more environmentally sustainable.
Investigating the transformative adaptation of Kenyan infrastructure (IGI)
The study investigates the wider community severance impacts of the development of new High-Volume Transport infrastructures in the informal settlement of Kibera, Nairobi (Kenya). The study employs a systems approach to explore how changes in connectivity have an impact on the resilience, and well-being of a community; how these communities react and/or adapt to such changes during the development of the projects; and assess the wider transport, environmental and socio-economic impacts of such infrastructure development.
Urban Transport Resilience of the Kenyan Older Population living in informal settlements (IGI – Principal Investigator)
The project investigates the mobilities of older people living in Kenyan informal settlements. The project is based in the informal settlement of Kibera, Nairobi (Kenya), and it explores how transport infrastructures and services, health, built environment, household characteristics and individual copying strategies affect mobility needs fulfilment during later life.
Investigating WMCA’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic (IGI)
This project investigates the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) response to the COVID-19 pandemic that led to the development of the WMCA Roadmap to Community Recovery. The study aims at assessing and documenting the processes and mechanisms that WMCA put in place to address the community recovery in the West Midlands region and provide reflections for future crisis/pandemics.
Recalibrating the Sustainable Development Goals: How to make Climate Action central to the SDGs? (IGI)
The project investigates the links between climate change and the other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the potential for climate change as a cross-cutting theme for the next iteration of the UN development goals.
