About

Dr Tung-Chai Ling is a lecturer with the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham. Prior to joining UoB, he spent 3 years as a Postdoctoral Fellow with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Between 2009 and 2012, he published in over 20 peer-reviewed journals besides a number of bibliographic conference papers and a book. In addition, he has won a number of research and academic awards as well as two product patents for his research work. He is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Civil Engineering and Construction Technology, and serves as a regular reviewer for a number leading international journals such as Cement and Concrete Composites, Construction and Building Materials, International Journal of Pavement Engineering, etc.

Qualifications

  • Post-Doc in Concrete Materials, 2009-2012
  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, 2005-2008
  • M. Eng. in Engineering (Traffic and Highway), 2003-2005
  • B. Eng. (Honors) in Civil Engineering, 1999-2003

Biography

Dr Ling received his first degree, BEng in Civil Engineering from Universiti Tecknologi Malaysia in 2003, and stayed on to complete an MEng in traffic and highway engineering. Following his master’s degree, he furthered his studies in accelerated pavement and concrete materials and was awarded a PhD in 2008.  Prior to joining the University of Birmingham in 2012, he was a postdoctoral fellow at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for 3 years in the field of concrete materials.

Since then, Dr Ling has specialized in the development of sustainable and environmentally-friendly concrete products through innovative materials science and engineering technology. His current research interests have focused on the recycling of various types of waste materials including hazardous wastes, materials science and engineering technology in cement/concrete composites, and the use of smart materials in concrete products for self-cleaning, air purifying and building energy saving.
