He is involved in two collaborative research projects investigating the ideals of professional ethics operative in the medical, legal, and teaching professions. Other research interests include the role of values in ecclesial policy-making on problems whose understanding and solution require specialized expertise; and the role of religion-based values both in inter-religious dialogues and in the political debate of pluralist democracies.

Qualifications

  • PhD (Durham)
  • MA (Durham)
  • Licence (Marc Bloch University, Strasbourg, France)
  • DEUG (Diplôme d'études universitaires generals, Marc Bloch University, Strasbourg, France)

Biography

Luca’s primary field of study and research has been theology, which he studied first at the Faculty of Catholic Theology of the Université Marc Bloch (now Université de Strasbourg, France); at the Department of Theology and Religion of Durham University in the UK; and finally at the Lonergan Institute of Boston College (USA). His doctoral research, now published as a monograph, focused on the issues concerning the democratization of the governance and decision-making of the Catholic Church. That work makes use of insights from political theory to address questions of church governance: among the problems discussed is the role of value judgments in the ecclesial policy-making process on matters whose understanding and resolution require specialized knowledge.

Research

Research interests include the respective roles of values and specialized expertise in democratic decision-making; the relevance of democratic theory to the governance of Christian churches; the role of religions in developing a global ethics.
