Janette joined the Department in 2013 and is Director of the BA in Education. She has lived and worked in Australia, China and the UK. Her interests are in cross-cultural teaching, internationalising the curriculum, international students, China’s curriculum reform, and pedagogy and scholarship in Confucian-heritage cultures. She previously taught Chinese in primary and secondary schools and has extensive research partnerships in China.

Janette worked for government in Australia for 15 years in policy development and as a Ministerial Advisor. During that time, she won an Australian-Chinese government scholarship to study in China for 2 years and on her return worked on the development of the sister State-Province relationship between the Victorian Government and Jiangsu Province. She later returned to academia and completed a professional doctorate on “University education for all? Teaching and learning practices for diverse groups of students”, and taught at Monash University, the University of Ballarat and Australian Catholic University. She moved to Oxford with her family in 2005 and is a Research Associate and Visiting Scholar of the China Centre at the University of Oxford. She has had links with China for three decades and has collaborative research partnerships with colleagues at several Chinese universities. She was Director of the Higher Education Academy’s Teaching International Students Project from 2008 to 2012 and has worked with universities across the UK on internationalising teaching and learning. From 2011 to 2012 she was Director of the Teaching and Supporting International Students Project at the University of Oxford.
