About

Dr Ghafouri-Shiraz is a Reader and the Head of postgraduate PhD studies in the School of Electronic, Electrical & Systems Engineering (EESE). His research interests are in the field of optical fibre communications, networks, devices, microwave filters and antennas. He has published more than 230 papers in refereed journals and also is the author of five books. He has received grants from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), industry and government.

Biography

Hooshang Ghafouri-Shiraz received the MEng and MSc degrees from Shiraz University in 1973 and 1978, respectively, and the Doctor of Engineering (D.Eng.) degree from the University of Tokyo in 1985. From April 1985 to June 1987, he was a Senior Research Fellow in Optoelectronic Development division of Anritsu Corporation in Japan. Since July 1987 he has been a member of the academic staff at the School of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham. He is the Head of Postgraduate Ph.D Studies, and has supervised many PhD and MSC students. He has published over 230 journal papers and five books. Also, he has been an active member of technical committees of many conferences as well as a referee for IEEE journals and IEE proceedings. Since 2008 he has been an associate editor for IEEE/OSA journal of Lightwave Technology.

His current research works are on novel codes for optical CDMA, novel optical devices, microwave filters and antennas.
