Farzad is an Assistant Professor in Opto-Electromechanical and PNT systems at the University of Birmingham with strong practical engineering background in electronics and embedded systems.

He has more than 20 years of experience in practical electronic engineering and field instruments both in industry and academia and currently collaborates closely with the UK National Quantum Technology Hub in Sensors and Timing and related industries in the field of quantum sensing.

Farzad’s main research activities and interests are related to PNT systems, marine, underwater, embedded systems, precision devices and ultra-low noise electronics; although he also has interests in wider field of remote and non-destructive sensing.

Biography

Farzad, after finishing his higher national diploma in mathematics and physics in 2000, started working at an engineering consultancy company as embedded circuit designer and programmer for 6 years before continuing his academic studies. In 2007 he finished his further education at Abacus College, Oxford, with distinctions and continued his higher education at the University of Birmingham.

He then, after graduation in Electronic Engineering with first class honours degree in 2010, joined the Emerging Device Technology (EDT) Group in the Electronic, Electrical and Computer Engineering school of the University of Birmingham to obtain his PhD. In 2014, he joined the Sonar and Acoustic Research Group at the University of Birmingham as the lead Research Fellow where he developed several novel field instruments for remote sensing using non-contact electrical resistivity techniques.

In 2018, he joined the UK National Quantum Technology Hub for Sensors and Metrology as Senior Application Engineer and helped the transition of the quantum gravity sensors from the laboratory into the field that resulted in the world’s first demonstration of a quantum gravity gradiometer in the field.

Since 2023, Farzad is working as Assistant Professor at the University of Birmingham with aims and visions to bring the engineering expertise into the field of quantum sensing to realise the commercialisation of these sensors.
