About

Lina Martino is a Research Fellow within the NIHR Horizon Scanning Centre (NIHR HSC). Her current research activity is in the field of health services, epidemiology and public health, supporting the work of the NIHR NHSC. The NIHR HHSC is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to identify emerging and new health care technologies likely to be of importance to the National Health Service in the near future.

Lina’s PhD was in the area of Health Psychology, and she continues to maintain an active interest in the subject and other psychology sub-disciplines.

Biography

Lina graduated from the University of Wolverhampton in 2000 with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology & French Studies. She went on to work as a Demonstrator in Psychology at Wolverhampton whilst researching for a PhD in Health Psychology. Her thesis entitled ‘The role of biological rhythms and blood glucose levels in maintaining a positive mood state’ was submitted in 2008.

Lina’s PhD drew upon a range of disciplines, including sociology, physiology and medicine; the interdisciplinary nature of the project facilitated her transition into health research. In 2006 Lina took up a research post with Keele University’s Addiction Research Group, using the General Practice Research Database to examine the epidemiology of drug misuse and psychiatric illness. She joined the NIHR Horizon Scanning Centre (NIHR HSC) at the University of Birmingham in 2009. As the NIHR HSC’s primary dedicated researcher, Lina provides support to the unit’s research programme in developing and improving horizon scanning activity, and considering the broader policy implications of its outputs.

Current research themes include early awareness and alert activities, health technology assessment, health services research and epidemiology.

Previous research has focused on physiological bases of mood and arousal, and the psychological well-being of women.
