Anna Lyon is a recently appointed Clinical Research Fellow hoping to develop a career in behavioural epidemiology, with a focus on obesity prevention and physical activity. She is also enthusiastic about the possibilities of working with large health-related datasets.

Anna Lyon qualified with a MB ChB from the University of Birmingham in 1997. She completed her house jobs in the West Midlands region before moving to East London to work in Newham General Hospital in the Accident & Emergency Department. Following this she commenced General Practice training on the Watford Vocational Training Scheme. After 15 months she withdrew from the scheme and took a reflective break from medicine.
In 2002 she took up a post as an SHO in Public Health in the West Midlands. During this time she also studied for a MPhil in the History of Medicine. In 2003 she commenced speciality training on the West Midlands Public Health training scheme. Completion of the MPH followed in 2004, in addition to success in the Part 1 and B exams of the Faculty of Public Health in 2005 and 2007 respectively. Anna became a Member of the Faculty of Public Health in 2007. Anna is due to complete her Public Health training in 2012. Anna was officially appointed to the post of Clinical Research Fellow with the Unit of Public Health, Epidemiology & Biostatistics in 2010, following successful application for a fellowship grant from the West Midlands Post-Graduate Deanery. Anna is now studying for a PhD in the field of obesity prevention. For her PhD she will be evaluating the physical activity component of the WAVES project (see below) and assessing intervention fidelity and its relationship to outcomes. Anna is also the Deputy Director of the Epidemiology, Statistics and Research Methods, and the Epidemiology, Statistics and Health Information modules of the Masters in Public Health programme.

My main research interests are behavioural epidemiology, with a focus on obesity prevention, and the public health aspects of physical activity. I have been / am involved in two major projects:
WAVES (West Midlands ActiVe lifestyles and healthy Eating in School children study): this intervention study is designed to prevent the development on obesity in primary school aged children.
