Annette Wood joined the University of Birmingham in 2011 when she was appointed as Director of the MPH programme and Senior Clinical Lecturer. In 2014, she moved to her current part time post as Medical Advisor to the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded Horizon Scanning Centre (HSC), a research programme which aims to provide policy-makers with advance notice of selected new and emerging health technologies that might require evaluation, consideration of clinical and cost impact, or modification of clinical guidance prior to launch on the NHS. Her role involves the assessment of medical technologies and input into HSC reviews.
She also works part time as a Consultant Screening and Immunisation Lead at Public Health England. She is an Examiner and Examination Logistics Lead for the Faculty of Public Health, an appraiser for Public Health England and an assessor for the national Public Health recruitment programme.
Annette trained in General Practice then Public Health Medicine. She was an NHS Consultant in Public Health/Communicable Disease Control in Birmingham for 15 years and a Unit Director in the Health Protection Agency (HPA) for 4 years.
Annette Wood qualified in medicine from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1986. She completed General Practice training in Cardiff and briefly worked as a GP. In 1991, she moved to the West Midlands to undertake Public Health specialty training, based mainly in Birmingham and Worcestershire.
She specialised in Communicable Disease Control and was appointed as an NHS Consultant to Birmingham Health Authority in 1996. She moved to the HPA at its inception in 2003 and was a Unit Director for 4 years. She was the West Midlands representative on the national HPA committees for TB, hepatitis and port health. Throughout this time, she was an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Infection and Immunity at Birmingham University.
In 2011, she moved substantively to the University of Birmingham as Senior Clinical Lecturer and MPH Programme Director. In 2014 she moved within the University to the NIHR Horizon Scanning Centre.
She has been extensively involved in teaching and training throughout her career at local, regional and national level. She has been a training coordinator, regional Public Health training Board member and regional less than fulltime training advisor. She is an Educational Supervisor and Academic Tutor. She is an Examiner at the Faculty of Public Health where she was also the Director of Training (Registration and Certification) for three years until 2014. She is a trained assessor for the national Public Health recruitment programme.
