PhD Title: Understanding common cause and special cause clinical variation in primary care

Ryan Irwin is a PhD student in the School of Primary Care Clinical Sciences funded through the National Institute of Health Research. His primary research interests are in quality improvement and understanding variation in primary care.
Ryan has a clinical background in Physiotherapy and after moving through the NHS Graduate Management Scheme, worked as a General Manager at large acute NHS hospitals in Cambridge, London and Birmingham. He has also worked as a management consultant supporting NHS organisations in areas from whole-system strategic service re-design, service transformation and governance reviews to operational delivery, performance improvement and commissioning development. Ryan has also contributed to national events and media such as the NHS Alliance Conference and the Health Service Journal on areas such as social enterprise and healthcare funding.
Ryan has a particular interest in health promotion and disease prevention, with a background as a personal trainer and semi-professional athlete.
