About

John is a Research Fellow in the School of Immunity and Infection researching how immune-suppression in multiple myeloma patients impacts upon infection risk, viral re-activation and myeloma relapse.

He is a co-inventor of University ‘spinout’ company Serascience Ltd, which specialises in novel diagnostic tests for blood cancers, including the first point-of-care (near patient) test for multiple myeloma called Seralite.

Following his PhD in exercise immunology, John maintains an active collaborative research program investigating how physical exercise affects immune competence, and has published numerous papers in this area.

John has received research funding from the MRC, as well as numerous awards from the University of Birmingham.

John is interested in supervising doctoral research students in the following areas:

  • Investigation into immune-suppression in multiple myeloma: risk of infections, viral re-activation and myeloma relapse
  • The effects of exercise on immune competence
  • Development of novel immunoassays for the diagnosis and monitoring of plasma cell dyscrasias, including multiple myeloma
