Felicity’s research interest is in novel clinical materials and she has filed 4 patents through the University of Birmingham. She has worked in the fields of drug delivery, Materials Science, drug delivery and microbiology and the development of antimicrobial agents for over 8 years and has high impact publications in the field including Angew. Chem and Soft Matter. She has developed peptide design for drug delivery applications and the concept of peptide-materials grafts to create smart material coatings.

Biography

Felicity qualified for her MChem (Hons) in 2008 from the University of York. She then moved to the University of Manchester to undertake a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry and Biomaterials under Professor Julie Gough and Dr Simon Webb. After graduating in 2012 she moved to the School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham for her first post-doctoral post looking at modifying the surface of medical implants to create smart materials. Following this she was offered a NIHR SRMRC trauma centre fellowship between the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Medical School at the University of Birmingham. She was recently awarded an ARVO fellowship and has started building the ocular drug delivery team.

Teaching

Felicity currently lectures on the Biomaterials MRes she also carries out small group teaching on several undergraduate courses in the Medical School covering a variety of topics.

Postgraduate supervision

Felicity’s research group currently consists of a post-doctoral researcher, two PhD students, four masters students and several undergraduate students.

Research

Felicity’s current research projects include:

  • Investigating the complex relationship between fibrotic cytokines and their antagonists in retinal tissues and how this mechanism relates to the development of ocular diseases such as proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
  • Developing a platform technology for ocular drug delivery to both the front and the back of the eye, particularly looking at delivery of age-related macular degeneration drugs via  topical administration
  • Exploiting the human anti-fibrotic/anti-TGF β response to develop novel treatments for glaucoma which can be delivered topically.
  • Designing osseoinductive coatings for implant materials which rely on low energy, low cost manufacturing to reduce the high cost of implants  for the NHS
  • Developing smart coatings for implant materials which can prevent infection, modulate scaring and be tailored to specific patients and or diseases

Other activities

Felicity is a STEMnet amabassador, Nuffield Supervisor and Outreach Representative for the NIHR SRMRC she is also the elected PERCAT representative for Clinical and Experimental Medicine.
