Noel McGuirk is a postgraduate teaching assistant at Birmingham Law School and is currently undertaking doctoral research on a legal analysis of the theory and the practice of terrorist profiling in the identification of terrorist characteristics.

Biography
Noel graduated with a first class honours LL.B in Law and Business Studies (UU). Additionally Noel also holds an LL.M in Human Rights and Criminal Justice (QUB) and a Masters of Research in Law and Society (Reading).
Teaching
Research
Noel’s doctoral research is focused upon completing a legal analysis of the theory and the practice of terrorist profiling in the identification of terrorist characteristics. This involves analysing whether existing criminal law profiling methodologies can be used in the context of terrorism so as to assist law enforcement officers with the identification of likely terrorist characteristics. In particular his thesis will argue that inductive profiling methodologies may be of assistance in identifying likely terrorist characteristics if they are applied within strict guidelines. The thesis will test this argument by completing a comparative analysis between the practices of formal and informal terrorist profiling.
Noel’s research interests lie in criminology, terrorism, legal responses to terrorism, human rights law, international law, criminal law and criminal justice.
Other activities
Noel has previously participated on the School’s Learning and Teaching Committee. He was also involved with the ‘Access to Birmingham’ and ‘Realising Opportunities’ schemes which widen student access to third level courses. Currently Noel has been awarded a PGTAship in providing study skills assistance to the College of Arts and Law.
