Joseph is the first Lecturer in Plastic Surgery to be appointed by the University of Birmingham, and is also a Speciality Registrar in Burns and Plastic Surgery at the University Hospitals of Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

Joseph has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, including review articles in the field of Burns and Plastic Surgery. His current research interests include the molecular pathogenesis of cleft palate repair, burn wound assessment and the systematic review of the current available evidence in Plastic Surgery.

He is a keen educator and regularly teaches trainee doctors on areas related to Plastic Surgery, as well as being an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Instructor.

Joseph Hardwicke qualified MB ChB from the University of Sheffield in 2000. He completed basic surgical training, obtaining MRCS in 2004, and then specialising in the field of Burns and Plastic Surgery. He then undertook a period of research as Healing Foundation Research Fellow at Cardiff University School of Dentistry, with the award of PhD in 2009 for his thesis “Polymer therapeutics to modify cellular responses in impaired human wound healing”. He subsequently became a Speciality Registrar in Burns and Plastic Surgery in the West Midlands Deanery and has continued his specialist training throughout the region with experience in Microsurgical Reconstruction, Burns & Trauma, Skin Cancer, Head & Neck Surgery, Paediatric Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery. He was awarded FRCS (Plast.) in 2013.

Joseph has research interests in the field of Plastic Surgery focussing on the pathogenesis of cleft palate healing and development, as well as clinical research in the assessment of burns and cutaneous blood supply using state-of-the-art dynamic thermography. He also is interested in assessing the best evidence available to Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, publishing systematic reviews to promote best standards of practice.

He has received awards to support his research as wells as being winner of the Society of Academic and Research Surgery (SARS) Jackson Prize, Sankey Research Prize and co-author for the Douglas Murray Prize in Plastic Surgery in the West Midlands. He has also received an International Research Prize from the International Society of Polymer Therapeutics.


Joseph is a current Royal College of Surgeons Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Instructor, teaching trauma doctors of all levels, as well as lecturing on topics in Burns and Plastic Surgery to medical students and trainee doctors.
