Research

Professor Shoumitro Deb is a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist for adults with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). He has qualified from India and subsequently trained in Medicine and Psychiatry in University of Wales, UCL and Imperial College, London, UK. His clinical and research interests include epilepsy, mental health and psychopharmacology among adults with ID, Down’s syndrome and dementia, neuropsychiatric consequences of TBI, advanced neuroimaging (VBM, DTI, MRS) and functional MRI in relation to apathy syndrome seen in patients with stroke and TBI. He has also started research on neuroimaging and care pathway for adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He is also involved in health services research.

The other achievements of Professor Shoumitro Deb include:

  • Joint research lead of Learning Disability (LD) Faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych), UK 
  • Led the evidence-based practice group at LD Faculty, RCPsych, UK 
  • Produced the RCPsych publication on the management of imminent violence in LD
  • Developed national and international guides on the use of psychotropic medication in the management of problem (challenging) behaviour among adults with LD (English, Spanish, Italian)
  • Developed national UK service guide for people with LD at transition age who have mental health problems and manifest problem behaviour
  • Developed first European guide on the assessment and diagnosis of mental disorders in LD (English, Spanish, Italian)
  • Developed first ever patient and carer determined outcome measure for adults with TBI
  • Developed first ever freely downloadable from the web accessible psychotropic medication information leaflets for adults with LD and their carers (including audio versions) 
  • Member of National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guideline development group (GDG) for Epilepsy guide and also advisor for self harm guide and National Service Framework (NSF) for chronic neurological disorders
  • Developed first ever carer determined dementia screening scale for adults with ID (English, French, Chinese)

  • made over 150 national and international conference presentations (including chairing sessions and giving key note speeches)
  • received over £2 million research grant
  • led a research/ teaching team of over 14 staff

  • is Co-Chair of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) Section for Intellectual Disability (ID) (SPID)
  • is the Training Programme Director (TPD) for the training scheme for psychiatry of LD at the West Midlands Deanery
  • is a working group (WG) member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) International Classification of Diseases (ICD) revision for version 10
  • was involved in developing first ever evidence based NHS commissioning guide in ID in Wales (Wales Health Evidence Bulletin)
  • is an executive committee member for LD Faculty and also Neuropsychiatry Section at RCPsych, UK
  • led curriculum development
  • is a member of the Policy Committee, Education and Training Standard Committee (ETSC), RCPsych, UK
