Ann trained as a psychiatric social worker and is a registered social worker. She has practised in residential, hospital and community based services. She is a member of the BASW mental health reference group, the RETHINK advice services advisory group and Suresearch, a Midlands based network of mental health service users/survivors and their allies. Ann is a member of the independent Inquiry into the 'Schizophrenia' Label and a trustee of Birmingham MIND.
Ann is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences, an external advisor for the Malaya University, Kuala Lumpur, and an honorary member of the Senate of the Faculty of Social Work, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She is on the editorial boards of the journals - Disability and Society; Gateways; Lavoro Sociale and the Russian Journal of Social Policy.
