Teaching

Motivation in Sport and Exercise Settings

Research

  • Motivational processes in sport and exercise
  • Perfectionism
  • Self-Determination Theory
  • Achievement Goal Theory
  • Athlete Burnout

His research mainly focuses on perfectionism. He has published this work in several leading journals in the field with Professor Howard Hall and Dr Andy Hill from York St John University.

With colleagues from the School of Sport and Exercise Science, Paul is collaborating with Professor Joan Duda, Dr Eleanor Quested and Dr Nikos Ntoumanis on a large 4-year funded project from the European Community (FP7 Health; approximately €3 million) to conduct an intervention study in the UK and four other EU countries. The project revolves around the promotion of quality youth sport experiences in football. With Professor Duda, Dr Ntoumanis and Dr Thorgersen-Ntoumani, Paul is also investigating the processes influencing undergraduate students’ motivation and behaviours towards their academic studies.

Other activities

Paul serves as a regular reviewer for various international peer-reviewed journals. Outside of work, he enjoys playing football, is a keen spectator of all sports, attempts to exercise on a regular basis, and spending time with his 1 year old twins.
