As HR Director, Heather is responsible for the HR Strategy, which sets out how our talent, performance and cultural change programmes will position colleagues to deliver Birmingham 2015. She originates and leads on HR policies and practices that will provide a colleague-oriented, high performance culture with an emphasis on engagement and quality, and the recruitment and ongoing development of exceptional colleagues.
She leads and co-ordinates the implementation of services, policies and programmes through the HR team, consisting of Operations, Strategy and Policy, Health and Safety, Workplace Wellbeing and People and Organisational Development, and she assists and advises University leadership about HR issues.
Heather joined the University of Birmingham as HR Director in February 2006 and this brought her full circle as she graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1987 with a combined honours degree in French and German. After University, Heather joined The Boots Company PLC as a graduate trainee and whilst there she completed her post-graduate qualification in Personnel Management.
Between 1989 and 1997 she held a number of senior HR positions as Head of HR for Boots The Chemists Small Stores, for Boots Opticians, and for Halfords.
From 1997-2002 Heather was a General Manager with Halfords and then joined RAC Roadside as HR Director in 2002.
She chaired the Russell Group of HR Directors from 2010 until 2012 and sits on the UCEA Board Advisory Group on pay, bargaining and workforce management. She is also a Peer Associate at the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education.
