UUK Code of practice

The UUK Code of Practice sets out the main elements of good management practice for student housing. This has established the standards and undertakings for our management practices and the relationship between you and Birmingham if you chose to reside in University owned accommodation.

The Code should assist you to understand both the standards and procedures in applying to accommodation and the obligations you will be expected to adhere to as a resident.

The Code is tailored specifically for each accommodation location and these are set out in detail on the individual accommodation pages. The detailed documents on these pages demonstrate how, if you become a student at the University, you can expect to be able to identify and receive help to remedy any shortcomings in the management of your accommodation. Where an audit and/or complaint indicates a persistent management failure the University may be deemed to be no longer compliant with the UUK Code of Practice and will be held to account for this.

The Code outlines best practice and provides benchmarks for the management and quality of student housing in the Higher Education sector. A full version of the UUK Code of Practice is available to download from the UUK website.

The Code is concerned with the main principles and essential requirements for well-managed student accommodation and the key elements covered by the Code include:

  • health and safety standards and procedures
  • fire safety
  • electricity and gas supplies
  • water supply and services
  • security
  • kitchen facilities and related items
  • maintenance and repair regimes
  • environmental quality

  • student support
  • antisocial behaviour and disciplinary procedures
  • administration of and compliance with the Code
