The University does not encourage students to bring cars. Local transport links mean that the majority of students don’t need a car. There are great public transport links from Selly Oak to Birmingham and the surrounding areas. Buses in and out of the city centre run along the Bristol Road on a regular basis and there are train stations with trains to Birmingham New St from campus and Selly Oak.
During term time parking is a major issue, particularly in Selly Oak where it can be difficult to get a parking space. The University asks you to consider whether you really need to bring your car this term, and to think about the benefit you can bring to the environment if more of you use public transport.
If you do need to bring a car make sure you are considerate of your neighbours, and ensure that you do not park your car outside local schools, as this is extremely dangerous. Cars parked haphazardly in an attempt to squeeze in closer to properties can also be dangerous, particularly when cars are parked on pavements causing people to step out into the road.
Parking at Halls of Residence
The University has a very limited number of parking spaces on its residential sites and therefore you are not encouraged to bring your own vehicle. You are NOT permitted to park vehicles at Jarratt Hall, except for blue badge holders by prior arrangement with reception for drivers who require access to a mobility parking space.
The Vale Village and Pritchatts Park Village have a limited number of mobility parking spaces which operates on the same basis as Jarratt Hall above.
In addition, the Vale Village and Pritchatts Park Village have a limited number of parking spaces and permits are available from reception with a current charge of £220 for 42 weeks or £80 for the Autumn and Spring Terms, or £60 for the Summer Term. Please note this operates on a first come first serve basis due to the limited availability of parking spaces. Visitors parking permits are available at a cost of £1.50 per day; please contact reception on arrival for more details.
We currently work with Parkforce, a parking enforcement agency, to control unauthorised parking on the Vale and Pritchatts Park Villages. Please note that any cars parked without displaying an appropriate permit or with a permit but parked in a restricted areas will be subject to a penalty charge, currently £60, with escalating charges for late payment.
We have set out the rules for all parking on campus on the intranet. This includes a section for students.
