Students with disabilities and additional requirements

We welcome students with disabilities to include Specific Learning Difficulties such as Dyslexia, mental health conditions and other health conditions. We positively encourage you to tell us if you have a disability in order that we can ensure that the most appropriate accommodation is allocated to you.  We also strongly recommend you contact the Disability and Learning Support Service or Mental Health Advisory Service, both of which can be contacted at www.as.bham.ac.uk/studentlife/disability or telephone +44(0)121 414 5130.

We have a wide range of adapted accommodation across a variety of locations. This includes rooms with mobility adaptations, and also visual and vibrating fire alarms.

To help us identify the accommodation that is most appropriate for you, it is important that we have as much information about your health condition as possible on your application form. These details should be included on your accommodation application form at the time of submission and will be kept confidential.

There is information about our adapted accommodation on the Disabledgo.com site and we have  a mobility map of the University Campus available online too. (PDF link)

Taster Stays

In addition to this we also offer Taster Stays where we can arrange an overnight stay or even a stay for a few hours in our accommodation over the summer period at The Vale Village.   This will give you an opportunity to experience our accommodation first hand incorporating all aspects of University accommodation.

Other support you may need at the University of Birmingham

In order to ensure that all your study and other support needs can be arranged in good time before you come to university, we would urge you to contact the Disability and Learning Support Service as soon as possible.

This will give you an opportunity to discuss with us your support needs and how they can best be met. You should be aware that if you choose not to do so you may not be able to access the full range of support available. The Disability and Learning Support Service can be contacted by telephone on 0121 414 5130 or by email at disability@bham.ac.uk. You will be asked to complete a Student Details Form and a Consent Form which are available from the Academic Services useful forms page.
