Admission requirements for Masters and Professional Development courses in the School of Education

An early application is advised as places are allocated on a first come first served basis. All applications plus supplementary material (letters of recommendations/references, official transcripts etc) must be submitted no later than 4 weeks prior to the start date of your chosen programme in order for your application to be considered for the 2011 academic year. If your supplementary material is received after the deadline, your application may be considered for the following academic year, 2012-2013.

Overseas applicants applying for full time study are advised to make an early application in order to ensure necessary arrangements can be made should your application be successful.

Accreditation of Prior Learning(APL)/Non standard qualifications

Academic and professional qualifications and prior experience, if any, are normally taken into account and in some cases can form an integral part of the entry requirement. If you are unsure of what information to submit, please send as much information as possible to demonstrate qualifications and experience. More information on APL and non standard qualifications

Upon receipt of your application you may, if you live in the UK, be invited for an interview or to visit the University.

Unless any particular requirements are specified on the programmes pages, admission entry requirements should be used as a guide to entry onto following awards: 

University Certificate, Certificate in Higher Education and Diploma in Higher Education

Candidates shall be required:

  • To have normally at least two years’ relevant experience in a related field and should be educated to GCSE/O-Level standard (but see entry requirements under specific programmes). 

Advanced Certificate (AdCert)

Candidates shall be required:

  • To possess professional qualifications or the equivalent of 240 credits obtained after the equivalent of a two-year full-time programme of study at HE level and have relevant experience;
    or: to have five years relevant professional experience and an appropriate educational background.
  • The School may admit candidates with other qualifications and experience deemed suitable for entry to this programme of study.

Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil)

  • To have a degree from an approved university or to hold diplomas or other qualifications judged satisfactory for this purpose and have relevant experience;
    or: to have five years relevant professional experience and an appropriate educational background.
  • The School may admit candidates with other qualifications and experience deemed suitable for entry to this programme of study.

Master of Arts (Education) (MA)

  • Candidates shall be required to have a 1st degree from an approved University and to have some interest or experience of studying education to the satisfaction of the accepting tutor.

Master of Education (MEd)

  • Candidates shall be required to have a 1st degree from an approved university or to hold diplomas or other qualifications judged satisfactory for this purpose.
  • Candidates must have successfully completed a programme of professional training.
  • Candidates must have relevant experience.
  • The School may admit candidates with other qualifications and experience deemed suitable for entry to this programme of study.
